INTRODUCTION
Churuli is a modern-day homage to the New Testament's Book of Revelation, a fascinating fanciful work that continues to be the subject of various, widely differing interpretations 2,000 years after it was written.
Lijo Jose Pellissery is a cynic to the core. If his earlier film, Jallikattu, left that question open, his new film Churuli clears it up. He refuses to shoulder the cross of exaggerating the importance of human nature.
He explores how men can morph into beasts without much provocation in film after film, provided the moment and environment are favourable for them to lose the pretence of civilization.
Churuli, like Jallikattu, is situated on a forested mountaintop. The barrier separating humans and wild creatures in this tiny community set amid a forest is razor-thin. It is a haven not just for animals, but also for criminals on the run from the law that governs civilised society.
Summary
Under the aliases Anthony (Chemban Vinod Jose) & Shajivan (Vinay Forrt), two undercover cops are on their way to Churuli. An informer has informed them that a criminal named Joy, an escape artist, is hidden within the area's lush green cover.
As they navigate the rigours of the treacherously slippery maze of the hilltop village, Anthony, a senior cop who has completed several similar operations in his career, doubles as a tutor to the relatively inexperienced Shajivan.
Anthony believes that his 20 years of dealing with undercover missions has ready him for Churuli. But this isn't any regular location. And it appears that nothing can prepare you for Churuli's trials. It's a mystical place that stirs up something primitive in everyone who visits.
A woman narrator delivers a traditional tale at the start of the film. It's the storey of a specter who is known for deceiving those passing through the jungle. Perumadan is the name of the phantom. Once upon a time, a knowledgeable Brahman began a project to catch Perumadan, but fell prey to his deception.
Perumadan is depicted as sitting in the bucket on top of the Brahmin's head in the narrative. Perumadan is in the air of Churuli in the film and distorts everyone who breaths it.
The location provides the utmost independence. People transform into different people once they cross the perilous bridge that goes into the enigmatic region. In this lawless nation, they don't have to seem to be nice, respectful, or well-behaved. Civilized society's constructs do not apply there. There are no role models or heroes to look to.
Every male in the hamlet is known to be nasty and treacherous, according to everyone in the community. Nobody aspires to find a greater calling in life. All they want is to be able to satisfy all of their senses without having to worry about someone looking over their bodies and criticising them.
Shajivan is initially portrayed as a faithful subordinate who believes in the legal system and wishes to uphold it. The environment of Churuli, on the other hand, gets something more out of him. He can indulge his every want without having to answer to anyone.
Analysis
Director Lijo Jose Pellissery has done an excellent job visualising the cryptic maze laid out by screenwriter S. Hareesh. Madhu Neelakandan, the cinematographer, has captured the amazing scenery of Churuli from varied and vivid viewpoints, providing us with a pleasurable viewing experience.
