India's First Rapid Rail 2023 |
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a momentous event on Friday, marked the inauguration of a 17km segment of India's first Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) in Ghaziabad. This remarkable milestone underscores the unwavering commitment of his government to elevate the quality of life for its citizens through a bolstered public transportation system, effectively highlighting India's multifaceted developmental progress on land, in the skies, and on the seas.
In a compelling 40-minute speech delivered shortly after flagging off and personally experiencing the Namo Bharat train, which connects Sahibabad and Duhai Depot stations, Modi pointed to India's recent accomplishments on the global stage. He referenced the successful G20 Summit, the historic touchdown of Chandrayaan-3 near the lunar south pole, and the impressive medal haul at the Asian Games. All of these achievements collectively reaffirm India's position as a pioneering nation, continually scripting a new narrative of progress across various sectors.
The inauguration of the RRTS priority corridor, consisting of five stations, is set to open its doors to the public on Saturday at 6 am. This endeavor, with a total span of 82 kilometers, will establish an essential link between Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Meerut, with a projected completion date of 2025. Built at a substantial cost of ₹30,000 crore, the RRTS is anticipated to slash the travel time between Delhi and Meerut to just one hour, employing trains capable of reaching a top speed of 180kmph.
"Today's India launches 5G on its capabilities and takes it to all corners of the country," Modi declared boldly. Today, India leads the world in digital transactions. Namo Bharat is also a symbol of 'Made in India.' The modern train service we are introducing today will be emblematic of the journey of a resurgent India and its aspirations."
He went on to predict that the current decade would witness a significant transformation in India's railway services, with premium initiatives such as the Namo Bharat and Vande Bharat train services, in addition to the ongoing modernization of railway stations through the Amrit Bharat initiative. "I am not one to harbour small dreams or tread cautiously," he declared. I want to assure the young generation of today that, by the end of this decade, Indian trains will be second to none in the world."
Modi also emphasized that the Indian railway system was on the cusp of achieving global excellence in safety, cleanliness, facilities, coordination, sensitivity, and capability. The trinity of Amrit Bharat, Vande Bharat, and Namo Bharat would symbolize the modernization of Indian railways by the end of the decade.
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which aims to modernize 1,275 stations across India, further signifies India's dedication to improving its infrastructure. In his speech, Modi recalled India's pivotal role as the host of the G20 Summit, which made the nation a center of global attention and intrigue. BLKE35HT5
The Delhi-Meerut Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), constructed at a total cost of ₹30,000 crore, stands as an 82.15km-long rapid rail corridor that promises to connect Delhi, Ghaziabad, and Meerut in under an hour. It is part of the first phase of the RapidX project managed by the National Capital Region Transport Corporation, which has identified eight RRTS corridors for development in the National Capital Region.
Modi proudly hailed the Namo Bharat as a symbol of women's empowerment, highlighting that the entire crew, from the driver onward, comprises women. He vowed to lead a transformative journey for the Indian railway system in the coming decade and urged people to take care of the trains, treating them as if they were their personal property. He affirmed that civic convenience was of paramount importance in infrastructure development, with Namo Bharat promising a more convenient life for commuters and opening new opportunities for the young, businesspersons, and women.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, among the dignitaries present at the inauguration, considered this a special Navratri gift, highlighting the considerable infrastructure improvements in India's most populous state. The "double-engine government" has enabled metro rail services in five cities of Uttar Pradesh, with Agra set to join the list in January, while the construction of a ropeway service is underway in Varanasi.
Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Hardeep Singh Puri was also present at the inauguration, underscoring the integrated, mass transit network's commitment to balanced and sustainable urban development.
The first phase of the project, the 17km long priority corridor from Sahibabad to Duhai, was originally slated to be operational by March 2023 but faced delays due to pending work in certain stations, particularly in Ghaziabad. The decision to prioritize the Delhi-Meerut route over other projects was based on the high frequency of travelers and traffic between Delhi and Meerut.
