"Kurup – The Phenomenal success of an entire movie team!
This review is dedicated to my 6-year-old son, a die-hard DQ fan ever since he was a toddler, and my sister who’s got some sick persuasion skills that made me change my mind to watch this movie instead of going for shopping, without whom this wouldn’t be possible.
I wrote this initially on my journal as I have a habit of penning down my thought when I come across ‘out of the planet experiences’ and it seems to be quite incidental as the movie Kurup is also narrated via a journal that belongs to Krishnadas, the great police officer who almost came near Kurup in his investigation journey.
I am not planning to ‘spill any beans’ as it wouldn’t be appropriate, but these are the key takeaways of the cast and the PR work: -
DQ as Kurup: - As a fan, you will find his performance like Aadityan in Vikramaadityan, the only difference is that his journey starts from being a simple conman to end up as a much worser criminal. His looks are relatable from that era as it is during 1964 till date, style relates to that of an upper middle class Persiakaaran from our culture later.
DQ might have done his best, but as a viewer I feel he could have done better. There was a larger scope that was left unexplored. Also, he is the protagonist cum the antagonist, as we progress, we see that he really struggles to portray the antagonist expression for which he had to puff more than 100’s and 1000’s of cigars. (For some reason, this is the common technique to portray someone in a bad manner if nothing else works!).
Also, I do not know if the Air Force/Navy/Army was easy with haircut rules ever! Everyone except DQ must go through excessive trimming of the tresses and he is left to keep his style as he wills. Seriously? Ashokanu Sheenamaavam but not like this!! :-). Another fact I noticed in DQ is that he has a good fan base among child audiences, thanks to his soft looks that creates artificial pull towards his characters, ABCD and Charlie are examples! You may check any random Malayali family, there will always be a DQ fan irrespective of his performance. DQ’s presence across, Tamil and Hindi film industries will gain him more fans after this movie. I personally know a few colleagues from TN who are die-hard fans of DQ.
Story Line: Let me honestly admit, I did not have a clue about the director Srinath Rajendran or his style, but the way they have put things into retrospective especially from the 80’s and 90’s really deserves applause, this is not easy. Setting up movies from those eras gradually end up in some sort of blunder but couldn’t notice any major flaw in the representation.
Again, unless you have a good memory to go back and forth to read between the lines, certain scenes won’t make sense. The first half goes in an average pace whereas the second half speeds up in double pace. The climax hints on the chances of a sequel but portrays Alexander as a typical bad guy which in my opinion, could have stayed a bit more realistic to the actual GK’s personality unless it was a total transition demanded by the script.
Stellar Performances: Indrajith and Shine Tom Chacko have delivered terrific performances. Indrajith as usual did justice to whatever roles given to him and this one as well, but Shine Tom Chacko was mind-blowing as his role was antagonizing that any random viewer would feel to get up and slap him left right and centre.
TBC.."
I hope guys you have enjoyed the review of the film 'Kurup' and I think you guys are ready to watch this movie at OTT Platform Netflix.
